Mattress Removal, Disposal, & Recycling in Victoria

Mattress Removal & Recycling?

Yes, we totally do that. We know lugging an older mattress to the dump is no easy task. We certainly wouldn’t want you trying to load up a floppy mattress on your own. That’s what we’re for! We will haul away any mattress of any size, as well as the box springs, frames, futons, etc. Two friendly junk removal experts will come right to your door and handle all the heavy lifting. Just leave it to us.

Here are a few other bedroom items that we can remove and recycle for you:

  • All the metal rails are used on raised box springs. These get taken to metal recycling at the Hartland Dump.
  • We also take futons, foam mattresses, headboards, footboards, wooden bases, and pretty much anything bed-like or supports a bed-like thing!

NOTE: Sorry, we won’t accept bug-infested mattresses or box springs.

Are Mattresses Really Recycled?

Yes! The pilot program that ran at Hartland Landfill was so successful, it became a permanent feature at the facility. All mattresses and boxsprings are mechanically dismantled for recyclable elements like steel and wood. Those mattress springs are heavy duty!

All that being said, it’s not all cinnamon toast and strawberries. There are some restrictions to what we can recycle at the mattress facility. The following items are not recyclable.

  • Futons
  • Foam mattresses
  • Mattresses that are unsanitary such as containing blood, urine or bed bugs
  • Wet mattresses
  • Burned mattresses

Keeping even one bed out of the landfill is a good thing, so we’ll keep recycling everything that we can.

Mattress Removal FAQ

These are our most common mattress removal and recycling questions. If you have more questions, please contact us right away. We will continue to add to this list.

Yes. There is a fee to remove and dispose of a mattress or mattresses. This is one piece of furniture that doesn’t age well, and there are usually sanitary concerns which render them not undesirable for donation. However, there are situations when the mattresses are in very good shape and can be donated to a local charity or housing organization.

The most recyclable part of a mattress is the box spring. Generally, protected from any mishaps happening on the mattress, the boxspring can be dismantled for it’s wood and extremely tensile spring steel! As mentioned earlier, the Victoria Landfill ran a very successful pilot program for recycling mattresses (and boxsprings) that was permanently adopted. We still need to pay to drop them off (weighed as household garbage), so there is a small fee, but the program is saving a large amount of material from filling up the landfill.

Not everything can be recycled, so please note the list below for what ‘can’t’ be recycled (but can be dumped).

  • Futons
  • Foam Mattresses
  • ‘Dirty’ mattresses that contain biohazards like blood, pee, bed bugs, and all the other fun things.
  • Wet or burned mattresses

We’ll take your mattresses along with all of your other junk, so it’s most cost-efficient if you bundle them up with your other stuff! It’s hard to know exactly what the costs will be, as there are a lot of variables. To get the best attention, please just give us a call and describe what you have. It just takes a minute, and you’ll have your quote!

Unfortunately, this is a tricky situation. We can’t accept infested mattresses or boxsprings; sorry! There’s just too much risk to our team for infection. Before you do anything, make sure to fully encapsulate your mattress in heavy-duty plastic to limit any additional exposure to people or other mattresses. Then call your local landfill and ask about what their policy is. Hartland, in Victoria (West Saanich) will accept them, but call to make sure. You’ll likely need to have it professionally treated with a certified note from a pest control company.
